Powerlifting tests you on a bar. Strongman tests you on everything else — atlas stones you have to lift and carry, a yoke loaded past your own bodyweight, a log you have to press overhead after already dragging a sled the length of a parking lot. The training is brutal in a way few other strength sports match, and the eating has to match it. Get strongman nutrition wrong and you don't just plateau — you stall out mid-event, or spend three days limping around instead of recovering for the next session.
A different kind of demand on the body
Most strength sports isolate a small number of movement patterns and let you specialize. Strongman does the opposite. A single training session might include a maximal deadlift variation, an explosive carry under load, and an overhead press for reps — each stressing muscle, joints and the nervous system in a different way, often back to back with minimal rest. That combination of heavy loading and sustained muscular effort burns through far more total energy than a typical powerlifting or bodybuilding session.
This is why strongman athletes, especially at higher bodyweight classes, tend to need meaningfully more total calories than lifters in other strength sports doing comparable training volume. Protein is part of that picture, but it doesn't work in isolation — without enough total energy behind it, extra protein can't fully do its job of repairing and building tissue.
The practical protein target
The underlying range for strongman athletes sits in the same evidence-based band that applies across strength sports: roughly 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day (about 0.7 to 1 gram per pound). What changes is the raw number, because strongman competitors are often carrying more total bodyweight than powerlifters or weightlifters in the same strength range — and that means a bigger absolute protein target even at the same per-kilogram number.
1.6–2.2 g per kg of bodyweight, daily. A 110 kg (240 lb) strongman competitor needs roughly 175–240 g of protein per day. In a heavy training block, aim at the top of the range — the joint and connective-tissue demands of event training reward the extra margin.
Because total calorie needs are often high, protein can end up a smaller share of the plate than in a typical cutting diet, even while the absolute gram target stays large. That's fine — the gram number is what matters for recovery, not the percentage of your daily calories it represents.
Event training changes the recovery math
A heavy squat session mostly taxes one movement pattern. A strongman training day loading stones, carries and presses in sequence taxes grip, spinal stability, and full-body coordination simultaneously — and the soreness that follows tends to be broader and slower to resolve than after a single-lift session. That has two practical implications. First, protein intake needs to stay just as high on the days after an event-heavy session as on the session day itself, since a large share of the repair work happens in the 24–48 hours afterward. Second, sleep and total recovery time matter more in strongman than in almost any other strength sport, simply because there's more tissue under stress to repair.
Grip and forearm strength deserve a specific mention. Stone loading and axle work hammer the forearms in a way barbell lifting rarely does, and that tissue is often the last to fully recover — under-fueling in the days after a heavy stone session is a common, quiet cause of grip that never quite feels fresh.
Eating around bodyweight classes
Strongman competes across weight classes, which puts some athletes in the same bind as powerlifters and weightlifters: wanting to add strength without necessarily adding weight past a class limit. The same principle applies here — protein stays high and steady regardless of whether you're trying to gain, maintain, or trim bodyweight, and the calorie surplus or deficit around it is the lever that actually moves the scale. Athletes competing in open or heavyweight classes, where there's no ceiling to manage, generally have more room to run a calorie surplus to support the sheer training volume, but the protein target itself doesn't change with the class — it scales with bodyweight, not competition category.
Building a day that actually supports this training
- Spread protein across 4–6 meals on heavy training days — the total volume of food needed is often too much to comfortably fit into three sittings
- Don't shortchange carbs. Explosive events like yoke walks and atlas stones are fueled primarily by carbohydrate, and running low leaves you flat exactly when power output matters most
- Keep protein steady on rest days — connective tissue and joints recover around the clock, not just when you're training
- Don't neglect fat. With such high calorie needs, dietary fat is often what closes the gap between a technically adequate diet and one that actually supports the training load
Mistakes that stall strongman athletes
- Chasing protein at the expense of total calories. Hitting a high protein target while under-eating overall still leaves the body without enough fuel to recover and grow.
- Treating every training day the same. An event-heavy session and a max-effort strict-press day place very different demands on the body, even if total protein intake should stay consistent either way.
- Underestimating how much food heavy training actually requires. Athletes moving into higher bodyweight classes often keep eating like they did at a lighter class, and wonder why recovery stalls.
- Skipping meals on travel or competition days. Event days are some of the most physically demanding of the year — exactly the wrong time to under-fuel.
